Generally, I find that most people are confused by copywriting vs. content writing – and honestly, why wouldn’t they be? They’re both writing, so what’s the diff? If you’re reading this you most likely didn’t go into business to become a writer or expert marketer. You went into business because you love your craft.
But, to successfully run your business, you need to put on your Chief Marketing Officer hat sometimes (even though that might feel uncomfy). So today I’m breaking down what copywriting and content writing are (and spoiler alert – why you need both on your website!), to hopefully remove some of the intimidation.
In short, copywriting is described as words that sell a product or service. Good copywriting is rooted in sales psychology and strategy and convinces the reader to take action of some kind. Whether that action is to sign up for a newsletter, buy a product or service, or something else – copy is written to sell.
Content writing is a little different. Content is written to inform or educate the reader on a certain topic, and does not have the goal of selling. In today’s marketing world, content writing typically refers to blog posts or articles on a website.
Believe it or not, most businesses can benefit from having a blog on their website. Why?
Having a blog on your website allows you to educate visitors on topics relevant to your industry. This in turn establishes you as an authority on those topics which is important for gaining potential clients’ trust (people buy from businesses they know, like, and trust!)
Especially in the creative world, blog posts allow you to feature your work and inspire the reader. For instance, wedding professionals can feature past weddings on their blogs, designers can feature past projects, or coaches can feature past client case studies – all of which help potential clients envision working with you and convince them to book!
Lastly, blogging consistently helps your website get found online. Google and other search engines love websites that regularly have new content added. So having a strategy to consistently post new blog posts is essential for SEO!
So how do you know whether your website needs copy or content?
Answer: It needs both!
Copywriting and content writing are equally essential to a quality, high-converting website.
Content writing (blogging) informs, educates, and inspires your audience. It warms them up!
And copy sells.
The two work hand in hand to sell your services. It is much harder to sell to a cold lead than a warm one, so that is where your content/blog comes into play. A good content plan on your website takes readers through a journey that inspires, educates, and informs them – while priming them for your sales copy.
If you’ve made it this far, and you’re still like ‘nah this is just not for me’ – I’ve got you! I offer both website copywriting and content writing services for creative entrepreneurs, so we can get your website chock full of both juicy sales copy and a strategic content plan.
